How do you perform Nordic Walking?

The American Nordic Walking Association, www.americannordicwalking.com, describes the basic technique like this:

1.“Every step should begin with the heel touching the ground and rolling forward to the ball and toe area, where you will push off to propel yourself forward.”

2.”The hands should constantly be in a “grip-n-go” state with the pole. They should grip the pole every time the pole hits the ground, then let it go as it is drawn back behind the body, finishing up with an open hand.”

3.”As the arms continue to move the poles, the torso and hips should be involved in a counter-swinging motion from the lower body. This effectively works the mid-torso muscle groups.”

Nordic walking is known to be an excellent cardiovascular exercise and works all major muscle groups. The American Nordic Walking Association notes that normal walking “only uses approximately 70% of the muscle mass in the body at any given time” but performing Nordic Walking engages “up to 90% of your body’s muscle”.
