What is Cryotherapy?

In simple terms, cryotherapy is cold therapy, which means the body is exposed to cold temperatures for a short period of time. Cryotherapy can be applied to one area or the entire body, and can be administered in a variety of ways. Localized cryotherapy can take the form of ice packs, ice baths, and cooling sprays. Whole-body cryotherapy (WBC) — which is what we offer at AFAC — can be achieved through the use of our cryotherapy chamber, also known as a cryosauna.

How Does Cryotherapy Work?

Here is how the whole-body cryotherapy chamber at AFAC works:

·         A trained member of the AFAC staff assists you during the entire cryotherapy experience from beginning to end to ensure your preparedness, safety, and comfort.

·         You’ll typically wear undergarments, thick gloves, and thick slippers during your cryotherapy session. It’s important that all clothing you wear is completely dry. Our staff can assist you with all of your questions about recommended attire during cryotherapy.

·         You’ll enter our chamber and a member of our staff will close the door, leaving your head exposed through an opening at the top.

·         The chamber is activated, which begins the release of liquid nitrogen that turns into vapor as soon as it hits the air.

·         The nitrogen cools the inside of the chamber to between -100°F and -230°F.

·         The cryotherapy session is complete in 3 minutes or less and you’ll exit the chamber.

During the session, your exposed skin reacts to the extremely cold temperatures by constricting blood vessels (vasoconstriction). This pushes blood from the surface areas of your body and muscles to your body’s core. When the session is over, your skin returns to normal temperature and your warmed blood quickly circulates throughout your body. This leaves you feeling rejuvenated and starts the anti-inflammatory process.

What Are the Benefits of Cryotherapy?

Cryotherapy has been credited with a host of physical and mental health benefits. You can feel these benefits after one cryotherapy session, but cryotherapy is most effective when used regularly. Some professional athletes use cryotherapy up to twice a day, while others use it daily, a few times per week, weekly, or monthly. Consult your doctor and our team at AFAC for advice on how many cryotherapy sessions would be most beneficial for you.

Some of the many potential benefits of whole-body cryotherapy include:

·         Increased energy and alertness for 6-8 hours after treatment

·         Numbing of pain

·         Relief from muscle soreness

·         Relief from the discomfort of sprains, swelling, and joint stiffness

·         Increased flexibility and range of motion

·         Quicker recovery from athletic injuries which allows for a faster return to training

·         Improved sleep quality and restfulness

·         Reduced migraine symptoms

·         Relief from anxiety and depression because of the release of adrenaline, noradrenaline, and endorphins during cryotherapy

·         Reduced arthritic pain

·         Weight loss

·         Prevention of dementia and Alzheimer’s disease because of cryotherapy’s anti-inflammatory and anti-oxidative effects

·         Improvement of skin conditions like atopic dermatitis and acne

Is Cryotherapy Safe?

Cryotherapy is one of the safest ways to treat inflammation and a variety of other conditions. In addition to cryotherapy being a trusted form of treatment for many years, the cryotherapy chamber at AFAC offers the following assurances:

  • The liquid nitrogen in our chamber does not touch the skin and it is safe to breathe (the regular air we breathe daily is about 78% nitrogen).
  • The door is never locked so you may step out of the chamber at any time.
  • The chamber is equipped with more than 10 built-in safety features, including an oxygen monitor and thermal imaging.
  • A trained member of our staff carefully monitors every session.
  • You can speak freely to our attendant at any time while you’re undergoing cryotherapy treatment to ask questions or raise any concerns.
  • The cryochamber is open at the top and adjusted to your height, so your head and neck will always be above the opening. This feature is especially helpful for those with claustrophobia, since they never feel fully enclosed inside the chamber.
  • Our cryotherapy chamber is thoroughly disinfected after every use and designed to provide you with the safest experience possible, even during the COVID-19 pandemic.

While it is safe for most users, a small percentage of people with certain conditions should avoid cryotherapy. Our staff is trained to screen every user before treatment and ask about their health history to assess whether cryotherapy is appropriate for them.

Is Cryotherapy Painful?

Unlike an ice bath, cryotherapy is not painful. The cold air doesn’t contain any moisture and there is no air current, which makes cryotherapy quite tolerable. During cryotherapy, your skin temperature will decrease about 30-45 degrees. You might experience slight shivers toward the end of the session, but those disappear as soon as you leave the cryochamber.

Cryotherapy is used for its therapeutic abilities, especially to:

Accelerate Recovery

Reduce Inflammation

Boost Metabolism

Studies have also shown Cryotherapy to have success with:

•Weight Loss • Reduced inflammation •Preventing Dementia •Preventing and treating cancer •Reducing anxiety and depression •Improving symptoms of eczema •Treating Migraine Headaches

And More
