This exciting partnership allows our members to train for one of the fastest-growing fitness competitions in the world while becoming part of a global fitness community built around strength, endurance, and determination.
Whether you’re an experienced athlete looking for your next challenge or someone who wants to take your workouts to a new level, HYROX offers an incredible opportunity to test your fitness in a motivating and supportive environment. At AFAC gym in Thornton, Colorado, we’re excited to help athletes of all fitness levels prepare for HYROX events with specialized training, expert coaching, and the equipment needed to succeed.
What Is HYROX?
HYROX is a global fitness race that combines endurance running with functional strength workouts in a structured indoor competition format. Unlike obstacle races or traditional endurance events, HYROX follows the exact same format at every event around the world, creating a standardized competition where participants can compare their performance with athletes globally.
During a HYROX race, competitors complete eight 1-kilometer runs, with each run followed by a functional workout station. This unique setup challenges cardiovascular endurance, muscular strength, power, and mental toughness all in one event.
One of the reasons HYROX has become so popular is because it appeals to a wide range of people. Elite athletes can push themselves for top rankings, while everyday fitness enthusiasts can participate simply to challenge themselves and experience the excitement of race day. Every event takes place indoors in large exhibition spaces, creating an energetic atmosphere where spectators can cheer participants on from start to finish.
The consistent race structure also allows for worldwide rankings and qualification opportunities for the HYROX World Championships, making the sport both highly competitive and incredibly inclusive.
What Is the HYROX Race Format?
HYROX races are made up of eight workout stations, each separated by a 1-kilometer run. The combination of endurance and functional fitness creates a demanding but rewarding challenge for participants.
1. 1000m SkiErg
The race begins with 1,000 meters on the SkiErg machine. This station primarily targets the shoulders, arms, back, and core, while also engaging the lower body when performed with proper technique. The SkiErg is a true full-body workout and an excellent test of endurance right from the start.
2. 50m Sled Push
Next comes the sled push, one of the most physically demanding stations in HYROX. Athletes must drive a weighted sled across a 50-meter course using lower-body strength, power, and core stability. Strong legs, solid conditioning, and proper footwear become especially important during this event.
3. 50m Sled Pull
After the sled push comes the sled pull. Using a rope system, participants pull a weighted sled toward themselves over 50 meters. This movement heavily challenges the back, glutes, biceps, grip strength, and overall core stability.
4. 80m Burpee Broad Jumps
Burpee broad jumps combine explosive movement with cardiovascular endurance. Athletes perform a burpee followed by a forward broad jump repeatedly over an 80-meter distance. This station can be mentally and physically exhausting, but many HYROX competitors eventually learn to enjoy the challenge it brings.
5. 1000m Row
The rowing station marks the halfway point of the race. Competitors complete 1,000 meters on the rowing machine, requiring a combination of power, rhythm, and endurance. Rowing engages nearly every major muscle group and tests an athlete’s pacing strategy.
6. 200m Farmers Carry
The farmers carry involves walking 200 meters while carrying heavy kettlebells or weights in each hand. Grip strength, posture, upper back endurance, and core stability all become critical during this station.
7. 100m Sandbag Lunges
Sandbag lunges are exactly what they sound like — athletes lunge forward for 100 meters while carrying a weighted sandbag across their shoulders. This station heavily targets the quads, glutes, hamstrings, and core while demanding serious mental toughness.
8. 100 Wall Balls
The race finishes with 100 wall balls. Competitors squat while throwing a weighted medicine ball toward a target repeatedly until all repetitions are complete. After everything that comes before it, this final station pushes athletes to dig deep and finish strong.
Who Can Participate in HYROX?
One of the biggest reasons for HYROX’s rapid growth is its accessibility. People from all fitness backgrounds and experience levels can participate. Athletes ranging from teenagers to competitors in their 80s have successfully completed HYROX races.
HYROX offers several competition categories, allowing participants to choose the level that best fits their goals and abilities.
Open Division
The Open category is ideal for athletes looking to challenge themselves and experience the event in a supportive environment. Standard race weights are used, making it approachable for most fitness enthusiasts.
Pro Division
The Pro division is designed for more advanced competitors. Athletes complete the same race format but with heavier weights, creating a significantly greater physical challenge.
Doubles Division
In the Doubles category, two teammates complete the race together. Partners run every kilometer together and divide the workout stations however they choose. This option is popular among friends, couples, and training partners.
Relay Teams
Relay teams consist of four participants. Each teammate completes two runs and two workout stations, making this division an excellent option for gyms, workplaces, and groups of friends who want to experience HYROX together.
What Is the History of HYROX?
HYROX was founded in Germany in 2017 and has rapidly expanded into one of the world’s fastest-growing fitness sports. Created by endurance event organizer Christian Toetzke and Olympic medalist Moritz Fürste, HYROX was designed to bridge the gap between traditional endurance races and functional fitness competitions.
Since its launch, HYROX has grown across Europe, North America, and beyond, attracting tens of thousands of athletes every season. Some races now host thousands of participants and spectators in a single weekend.
One of the defining features of HYROX is its inclusivity. There are no qualification requirements and no strict finishing time limits. Participants are encouraged to race at their own pace while enjoying the support of spectators, fellow competitors, and the larger HYROX community.
Because athletes start in waves throughout the day, beginners and elite competitors can experience the excitement together without worrying about finishing “last.” This welcoming atmosphere has helped HYROX become a global fitness movement.
What Is the Purpose of HYROX?
At its core, HYROX is about more than racing. The goal is to build a worldwide community centered around fitness, health, personal growth, and shared experiences.
The HYROX community, often referred to as the #HYROXFAMILY, includes athletes, coaches, supporters, volunteers, judges, and partner gyms from around the globe. The sport encourages people to challenge themselves physically while building connections with others who share similar goals and passions.
For many participants, HYROX provides a clear sense of purpose in training. Instead of simply working out without direction, athletes train with a specific event and measurable goal in mind.
Where Do HYROX Races Take Place?
HYROX events are held in large indoor exhibition venues around the world. These expansive spaces provide enough room for the full race setup while ensuring consistent conditions for every competitor.
The race venues are much more than competition spaces. Athletes and spectators can enjoy warm-up zones, recovery areas, vendor booths, fitness equipment displays, merchandise shops, music, food vendors, and interactive sponsor experiences. The high-energy atmosphere helps create an unforgettable race-day experience for both participants and supporters.
As HYROX continues to grow internationally, new cities and countries are regularly added to the race calendar.
Where Do I Register for a HYROX Event?
Registration for HYROX events takes place directly through the official HYROX website. Athletes can browse upcoming race locations, choose their division, and complete registration online.
Because many events sell out quickly due to the sport’s popularity, it’s a good idea to register early once you decide which race you want to participate in.
How Do I Prepare for HYROX?
Preparing for HYROX requires a balanced training approach that includes endurance, strength, conditioning, and functional movement practice. Because the race combines running with demanding workout stations, athletes need to develop both cardiovascular fitness and muscular endurance.
Training at an official HYROX Training Club like AFAC gym gives participants access to the right equipment, structured workouts, and knowledgeable coaches who understand the demands of the race format. From sled pushes and SkiErg intervals to rowing technique and wall ball conditioning, athletes can practice the exact movements they’ll encounter on race day.
At AFAC gym, we’re excited to help members train smarter, build confidence, and prepare for HYROX competitions in a motivating team environment. Whether your goal is simply to finish your first race or compete at a high level, our coaching staff is here to support your journey every step of the way.
