If it’s the day after a workout, you’re probably feeling it. The fatigue and sore muscles letting you know your body needs time to recover. Recovery is when your body starts to rebuild muscle but sometimes it may take longer than you want it to. Try these 5 tips to help speed your recovery the next time you hit the gym for a big workout.

  1. Don’t Overdo It- Feeling the burn is a good thing, but being on fire for days after is not. It’s ok to push yourself at the gym, but totally destroying yourself will mean your body will need more time to recover and this could affect your workout routine.
  2. Replenish Fluids- Making sure you drink plenty of water is very important. It helps prevent dehydration which can cause more damage to your muscles. Dehydration also makes it harder for the body to recover and repair itself, so make sure you are getting plenty.
  3. Stretch- Don’t skip the stretching, even on recovery days. Stretching before your workout can help prevent injury. Stretching on your recovery days has been shown not only to aid in recovery but help speed it up as well.
  4. Refuel Right- To help speed recovery, it’s important to refuel your body. A post workout protein shake can help your body get the necessary nutrients it needs to help muscles grow and recover more quickly. Don’t forget a banana. Potassium is another great post workout nutrient to consume, since it is essential for muscular energy.
  5. Sleep It Off- Sleep is more than the body just resting, it’s a time when the body is recovering. Getting enough sleep is one of the best ways to help speed up workout recovery. Try and get at least 7 hours to help get you going.
