What is a Fitness Boot Camp?
Fitness Boot Camps, which have risen in popularity over the years, are exercise classes that mix calisthenics, bodyweight resistance exercises, strength training, and interval training. There are many different types of “boot camps,” but they have one thing in common — to push participants past where they’d push themselves alone, similar to the kind of push that occurs in a military boot camp. Most fitness boot camps are held outdoors but some are held indoors, while others have a combination of indoor/outdoor training.
Fit Soldiers 2.0 at AFAC is an ongoing class for all fitness levels and can be joined at any time. Like all fitness boot camps, ours promotes an environment of camaraderie and team effort to motivate greater weight loss, endurance, and strength among participants. Often, workouts involve explosive moves to increase heart rate while also working different muscle groups. This method helps participants get results in a short amount of time.
And that is really the ultimate goal of a boot camp — to achieve visible, measurable results by the end that participants can build upon after “graduating.”
What happens at a Fitness Boot Camp?
Fitness Boot Camps typically have up to 10 participants per class. During the first class at AFAC, you’ll undergo a fitness assessment with our InBody 770 machine. This assessment is repeated at intervals based on what you and the instructor, Dave, decide is best, allowing you to see the progress you’ve made.
Boot camp workouts, which last about 45 minutes, can involve any of the following exercises and many others:
- Warmups
- Pushups
- Squats
- Lunges
- Burpees
- Sprints
- Core strength exercises (crunches, planks)
- Plyometric exercises
- Interval training
- Partner exercises
- Team competitions
- Obstacle courses
- Stretching and cool down exercises
- Meditation
What are the different types of Fitness Boot Camps?
Since fitness boot camps thrive in an environment of teamwork and group support, they naturally work well with specific demographics or audiences with a shared goal. After all, a group of like-minded people is bound to understand and motivate each other, thereby achieving peak participation and results.
Examples of specialized boot camps include:
- Weight loss boot camps
- Bridal boot camps
- Bikini boot camps
- Mind-body boot camps
- Swimming boot camps
- Ski prep boot camps
- Running boot camps
- Soccer boot camps
- Bicycling boot camps
- Women- or men-only boot camps
- Kids boot camps
- Senior boot camps
- Military-style boot camps
- Prison-style boot camps
- Charity boot camps
What are the advantages of a fitness boot camp?
The main advantage of a fitness boot camp is that participants receive a whole-body workout that builds endurance and strength. Boot camps are basically a crash-course in fitness.
Other benefits of fitness boot camps include:
- They offer challenging, varied, and comprehensive workouts.
- They burn a lot of calories (10 calories per minute on average).
- No special equipment is required.
- They provide fast, measurable results.
- They build confidence.
- They push you past your mental and physical limits and you’ll surprise yourself with what you’re capable of.
- You’ll work every muscle group.
- You’ll get diet and nutrition advice.
- They’re never boring.
- There is a strong sense of camaraderie, support, and teamwork among participants.
